First: If you haven't done so yet, create your ChemWeb account. ChemWeb will be your grade book for this class. All your work that is graded will be submitted in ChemWeb. Also, ChemWeb has your assignment due dates. Be sure the email address you use to create your ChemWeb account is one you check often so you will get all the class emails. Starting Class: This class consists of chapter book work (lecture) and labs. For each assigned chapter (listed below), you will read the chapter, complete the tutor materials for that chapter and take a quiz. Then you will complete a lab experiment (see the lab page). There are due approximately each week. After 3 chapters there will be an exam. We recently received permission from the publisher of the textbook and lab manual to include them without charge to our online students. To access the books, login to your ChemWeb account and click on the chapter quiz and/or lab. At the top of the page is a link to the .pdfs. You can open then close the quiz and/or lab and reenter at a later time.
Where to find stuff:
- Free Textbook e-book files: In your ChemWeb account, open the quiz for the chapter you are working on and at the top of the quiz is a link to the chapter(s) in .pdf. Don't worry about opening the quiz when you aren't ready to take it yet. You can go in and out of the quiz until it is submitted or the due date passes.
- Answers to Learning Checks: Appendix C is located in the tutor site near the top of the home page.
- Answers to end of chapter exercises: Listed under each chapter in the tutor site.
- Lab e-book files: In ChemWeb, click on the lab you want and at the top of the page are the .pdfs to the lab book and the lab files.
For the "Big Question", the boxes are located in the chapter e-book file throughout the chapter.
There won't be any "meeting times" or scheduled lecture meetings. You will work independently since I allow everyone to work ahead, everyone may be at a different place so making meeting times difficult. Here's Where you Start: |
Chapter 1 (Study Guide):
The Study Guide next to each chapter above will tell you what sections of the chapter you will need to study. It will also outline which "end of chapter" exercises you may want to do to practice the skills you learned. The end of chapter exercises will not be collected for grading. 1. Read the chapter. Hint: As you go through the steps below, it's a good time to begin compiling your "cheat sheet" that you can take with you into the exams. You will be allowed one page of notes in the exam. See the "Exams" page for more info on preparing this page of notes of exam use. Reminder: The textbook chapter .pdf is in ChemWeb at the top of quiz #1.

2. Tutor Materials: Submit the chapter(s) tutor work. The tutor materials are a paid access site. To purchase the online access to this material go to the site www.chemfortodaytutor.com. When you first register here is when you pay for the access; after that initial time, you can login here or you can add the login info into your ChemWeb profile for easier one click access (top right corner of the ChemWeb grade book). If you haven't purchased it yet, you will need to do that first. If you need help, email the bookstore at the bottom of the tutor login page. The tutor is set up as a series of statement/questions. You will answer those questions on the answer sheet or separate paper and then digitize that answer sheet to submit. You will need to submit this work for a grade. The answers are provided during the course of the tutor work so you can check yourself along the way. What we want you to submit is showing your work where possible. You can handwrite (the answers only) to the activity, then scan it into a digital format or you can type the activity for submission. You must get the information into a digital format to submit. You can submit several files(pages) for each chapter. One file is fine too. There are multiple file upload slots. If you can get all your answer sheet(s) into one file, that's sufficient. Some can't scan multiple pages to one file, so there are more slots there. To digitize it, you can scan it, take a picture of it (readable), type it into Word or other methods. You will submit this work in ChemWeb. The Tutor materials are comprised of file in .html format, so will run on any computer that runs basic internet browsers. 3. You are ready to complete the quiz on this chapter. You will do this by logging into your ChemWeb account. A good strategy is to print the quiz, take it on paper, then use your book/notes to correct the quiz prior to submitting it for a grade. This can help you figure out where you need more study time to be prepared for the exams while still saving valuable points from mistakes on the quizzes. 4. Now click on the "lab" tab and be sure to read the instructions for completing the lab experiments. Complete the labs in the lab manual (book or .pdf) and complete all the worksheets. These worksheets are the answers to what you will input in ChemWeb for grading. Hint: If you have a used book and there is a lot of writing in it, a good solution is to go to ChemWeb, print the input screen for the lab and that gives you a basic, blank worksheet that you can work from. Input your lab work in ChemWeb for grading. Also, if you have a used lab book that is missing the rulers page 5/6, look on the "lab" page under lab #1 for a link to a printable copy. 5. The Big Question Assignment is a general education required activity. It is located in Canvas in your course "assignments" tab. Once you complete it, you can go into your ChemWeb account and complete the one question submission. In Canvas there are two "courses" listed with the same name. This is because the computer system requires a separate lab class with Chem 1110. Since the lab class is included in the 5 credit class, they fixed the problem by making a zero credit duplicate course. If you click on one and it doesn't have "assignments" in the left hand column, click on the other class. 6. Now is a good time to get your testing arrangements made. You MUST use ChemWeb Proctoring (CWP) for taking exams. Review the "Exams" page for more information about the exams for this class. Practice exam questions are available on the tutor site. |
